English as a Second Language
The ESL program at Pleasant Grove ISD identifies and serves students who are learning English as a second (or additional) language. Our goal is to provide a quality program that differentiates and scaffolds instruction across the curriculum according to the language needs of each student. Instruction is offered in English, and teachers integrate second-language acquisition methods into their instruction. The ESL program is offered at each grade level and serves close to 150 students.
Program Eligibility
School districts in Texas are required by state law to assess the English language proficiency of all students whose Home Language Survey indicates a home language other than English. Students who demonstrate limited English proficiency on the assessment will be eligible for enrollment in ESL.
TELPAS
TELPAS (Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System) is an annual assessment for ESL students. Each spring, TELPAS evaluates the progress that each student is making towards proficiency in the use of academic English in four domains: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
