Physical Activity for Students in Elementary and Middle School 

In accordance with policies at EHAB, EHAC, [and FFA], the district will ensure that students in elementary school engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day or 135 minutes per week.

Students in middle or junior high school shall engage in 30 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity per day for at least four semesters OR at least 225 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity within a two-week period for at least four semesters.

Vending Machines

The district has adopted policies and implemented procedures to comply with state and federal food service guidelines for restricting student access to vending machines. Tobacco Prohibited

The district and its staff strictly enforce prohibitions against the use of tobacco products by students and others on school property and at school-sponsored and school-related activities. [See the Student Code of Conduct and policies at FNCD and GKA].   

1. To be a health advocate for the student and collaborate with parents, teachers, and other support personnel to aid the student in reaching their full potential.
2. To provide first aid and emergency care to anyone in the district that becomes injured.
3. To provide appropriate and approved treatment to anyone in the district who is ill.
4. To maintain privacy and confidentiality of all students and staff who enter the health office.
5. To screen and detect any impairments that may impede educational success.
6. To refer students to their physician or specialist when an impairment is discovered.
7. To aid parents with resources needed to meet the health needs of their student(s).
8. To follow-up with referrals and make sure the student meets minimum state screening requirements once intervention has occurred.
9. To assist in the prevention and transmission of communicable diseases.
10. To maintain health records.
11. To meet federal, state, and local health compliance requirements.
12. To educate and promote health maintenance across the district.

Medications, when possible, should be scheduled to be taken at home. There are times, however, when your child may require a medication to be given at school. According to TDSHS guidelines and PGISD Board of Trustee policy, medication may be dispensed to a student by school personnel provided the following requirements are met by the parent or legal guardian:

1. A medicine is to be brought to and kept in the school health office.

2. Prescription and non-prescription medicine must be in the original container.Prescription medicine must be in a container with the pharmacy label for that student.

3. Administration of all prescription and non-prescription medications requires a signature from the health care provider and the parent/legal guardian.

4. School personnel will not give any medicine unless it is provided by you in the appropriate manner as stated above.

5. No student may have prescription or non-prescription medications in his/her possession on school grounds during school hours. Exception for emergency medications with written authorization by health care provider and parent or legal guardian.

All medications stored in the Health Office must be picked up by parent or legal guardianby the end of school year. Medications will notbe given to studentsto transport home. Medications not picked up will be destroyed. A letter will be sent prior to end of school year.

Here at PGISD we want the best learning environment for your child possible, and we understand that attendance is extremely important. There are times, however, when your child does not need to attend school. Health Services personnel must consider the best interests of your child, other students, and staff when excluding students from school. We understand it is hard sometimes to determine if your child needs to stay home. Listed below are a few guidelines to help you.  

• FEVER –oral temperature with a thermometer, and if 100.00 or above must be below 100.00 for 24 hours before returning to school (without taking a fever reducing medication)
• VOMITING/DIARRHEA­ more than once, or associated with a fever, or the child feels ill (unless determined by a physician note cause is not infectious)
• SKIN RASHES­ (with drainage or fever) if questionable a physician note stating it is not caused by an infectious disease
• COMMUNICABLE DISEASE­ treated appropriate amount of time as directed by physician
• HEAD LICE­check with health office
• RED EYES­ (with crusty purulent drainage)­(possible pink­eye) need physician release or symptom free to return to school
